388. The International

July 10, 2026

Palm Beach International Airport has been renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The previous name included the word "International." The new name also includes the word "International." These are, however, two different uses of the word. The first described the airport's function as a facility that handles international flights — aircraft arriving from and departing to destinations outside the United States. The second is part of the proper name of the forty-fifth and forty-seventh President of the United States, who is from New York but has a residence in Palm Beach, which is the same city as the airport.

The renaming required a vote by the Palm Beach County Commission, which approved it. The vote is a matter of public record. Following the vote, all airport signage, navigation databases, and official documentation began using the new name. Travelers flying into Palm Beach from international destinations will now arrive at an airport whose name contains the word "International" for two separate reasons. They will not know which one they are experiencing at any given moment. This is, technically, an ambiguity, but airports have not historically prioritized naming clarity. Many airports are named after people who died before the airport existed. At least this one is named after someone who can watch planes land from a golf course.

(The identifier for Palm Beach International Airport was PBI. The identifier for President Donald J. Trump International Airport is DJT. This means that the change required updating not only the signs but the aviation databases. The IATA code change is set for August 18, 2026. Planes will continue to use the runway until that date under the old designation. For approximately six weeks, the word on the sign and the code in the system will not match. This is consistent with how airport renaming works.)

Passengers passing through will see the new name. They will form a view about it. The airport's function will remain the same: planes will arrive, planes will depart, luggage will be delivered to a carousel. The word "International" will continue to appear on everything, doing its new double duty, quietly, without explanation.
