419. The Co-Hosts

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is currently being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This is a fact. The tournament began in June. The final is being played this weekend. It is, by all available measures, ongoing.

While it is ongoing, President Trump has stated that the United States should host the next World Cup on its own, without Canada and Mexico.

(Trump made the statement on July 18, 2026, at a FIFA reception at Trump Tower, in New York City. The World Cup final is July 19. The statement was made while the current World Cup, which is co-hosted with Canada and Mexico, still had one match left to play.)

The three countries agreed to co-host in 2018, when FIFA awarded the tournament jointly. The agreement involved infrastructure commitments, venue guarantees, border coordination, and eight years of planning. The World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in human history. Roughly five billion people have watched at least part of it. Some of the games were played in Canada. Some were played in Mexico. The final, between Spain and Argentina, is in the United States.

Trump's statement was that the United States should "leave Canada and Mexico out" next time. He did not explain what this would mean for the contracts that were signed in 2018, or for the countries that hosted matches in the current edition, or for FIFA, which awards tournaments based on bids that require government assurances and multi-national cooperation agreements.

The proposal is notable for its timing. The way to announce that you will no longer co-host something is generally not while you are currently co-hosting it. The convention is to wait until the thing is finished. Whether this convention is legally binding is unclear. What is clear is that Canada and Mexico are currently co-hosts of a tournament that is still happening, and the United States has expressed a preference to host the next one without them, at a press conference, during the co-hosted tournament.

FIFA has not commented. The tournament ends this weekend. Canada and Mexico remain co-hosts until it does. The plan for next time is, apparently, to do it without them. The current one continues.
