The Subsidy

September 10, 2026

On September 2, 2026, Robinhood Chain became the number one blockchain in the world by daily revenue. It earned $4.01 million in a single day, surpassing Ethereum, Solana, and Tron. This is true. You can look it up. Headlines called it historic. Vlad Tenev, CEO of Robinhood Markets, Inc., did not correct them.

Here is how the revenue worked. When Robinhood Chain launched in July, Robinhood announced a 90-day promotional period during which all gas fees would be free. Gas fees are the small charges you pay to do things on a blockchain. Normally the chain earns this money. Under the promotion, Robinhood paid every user's transaction fees directly. Users used the chain for free. Robinhood absorbed the cost. The chain recorded revenue.

The chain recorded Robinhood's own money as revenue.

I want to make sure you are following this. Vlad Tenev's company paid Vlad Tenev's blockchain to process transactions, which the blockchain then counted as revenue earned, which analysts then reported as Vlad Tenev's blockchain surpassing Ethereum. This is technically a correct description of events in the same way that buying yourself a birthday cake and eating it alone is technically a celebration. The cake is real. The celebration is the part that requires scrutiny.

The $4.01 million did not come from users who chose to pay for something they valued. It came from a promotional budget, which is a specific category of money that companies spend to create the impression that a product is popular before it becomes popular, or until the budget runs out, whichever is sooner. The budget runs out on September 29. (This is 20 days from the date I am writing this, which means you are probably reading it from a future in which we already know what happened, in which case I hope the answer is interesting and not simply "it stopped.")

In August, Robinhood quietly reduced the qualifying transaction threshold from $5.00 to $0.50. (I am not making this up.) This is a thing you do when the expensive definition of success is becoming difficult to maintain. It appeared in documentation. Documentation is where policy adjustments go when the company would prefer you encounter them only if you are specifically looking.

Through September, the chain had processed 576 million transactions across 12.3 million addresses and $34.6 billion in DEX volume. These are large numbers. They are also numbers generated during a period when the service cost users nothing, which tends to increase volume in the same way that a restaurant offering free meals tends to increase reservations, and also in the same way that those reservations tend to thin out once the meals cost money again.

The September 29 subsidy expiration was not mentioned in the headlines that called Robinhood Chain historic.

Vlad Tenev is the CEO of a publicly traded financial services company. He will be fine.
