The Agent

September 11, 2026

Monday.com, the project management platform, announced in July that it was laying off 630 employees — approximately 20 percent of its workforce. The co-CEO, Eran Zinman, stated in the announcement that the move "was not made to reduce costs or replace people with AI." The company expects to incur between $45 million and $55 million in one-time restructuring charges from the decision that was not made to reduce costs.

The investment will go toward AI agents.

An AI agent is a piece of software that performs work autonomously. A company employee is also a person who performs work. Monday.com has concluded that the second category should get smaller so the first category can get bigger, and Eran Zinman wants you to understand that when a company spends fifty million dollars replacing one kind of agent with another kind of agent, the correct frame is not financial. It is strategic.

(A restructuring charge is a specific accounting entry that describes money spent in order to become a company that spends less money. Monday.com is incurring one. Eran Zinman has clarified that saving money is not the goal. Both of these things are true simultaneously.)

The 630 employees who received notices this month worked at a company that makes software for managing work. The software is now capable of doing more of that work. Monday.com decided to respond to this development by reducing the number of people doing the work, then redirecting the money toward the software that will do the work, then describing the overall maneuver as a restructuring around AI agents rather than a cost-cutting measure, because there is a difference between those two descriptions and Eran Zinman believes the difference is important enough to mention in a press release.

Eran Zinman is the co-CEO of Monday.com. He is not an AI agent. He will be fine.
